Starting School

Legally, children must attend school from the beginning of the term following their fifth birthday.  However, it is the policy of South Gloucestershire to admit children to school the September following their fourth birthday.  We organise an Open Day in the Autumn Term for prospective parents and carers. But we welcome visits at any time, please contact the school.

All prospective parents, whether with children just starting school or changing schools, must apply to South Gloucestershire Council (the Local Authority) either on-line at www.southglos.gov.uk, or if with no access to the internet can obtain an application form from the School Office which must be returned to the “Student Access and Support Team” at South Gloucestershire Council, Department for Children and Young People, PO Box 2082, Council Offices, Castle Street, Thornbury, South Gloucestershire, BS35 9BQ.  Their telephone number is 01454 868008.

For children changing school the Local Authority will confirm a child’s place at Hawkesbury CE VC Primary School on receipt of the application form, provided spaces are available.   We can then arrange a school visit and make arrangements for a child to start school.

For new Reception children we contact parents after Easter and organise visits for parents and pre-school pupils to come into school.  Parents and carers are invited to meet the Reception class team and are provided with starting school information.  Before a child starts school in September, we arrange home visits, when staff from school will meet with parents/carers and the child. As in other local schools, children in the Reception class attend school on a part-time basis in September. They will attend mornings and then move on to stay for school dinner and then full days.  This helps the children get to know their new class teacher and other adults in school, as well as other children in a smaller group. The children become familiar with the classroom and school layout and they develop confidence in school routines.  If parents wish to postpone entry until the Spring or Summer term, this is possible so please discuss this with the Head teacher.

Currently our admission number is 15 per year group.

Secondary Transfer
The parents of the children in Year 6 are given the opportunity by the end of October to choose their secondary school.  Application letters with personal online reference details are sent by South Gloucestershire Council to the school and sent out to parents. Each of the local secondary schools gives the parents an opportunity to visit and make an informed choice regarding their child’s next school.

We have strong links with local secondary schools; Katharine Lady Berkeley School in Wotton-under-Edge, where most of our children move onto, and Chipping Sodbury School. Some of our children attend Marling boys and Stroud High Girls Grammar schools in Stroud. The Year 6 pupils are invited to “Induction Days” in June and their staff visit our school to meet the pupils and liaise with the teaching staff. Transfer from primary to secondary can be an anxious time for both pupils and parents; we aim to keep this to a minimum. If you have any worries or queries regarding this matter please contact us.
